Livewire: a place where people just get it

What is Livewire Online?

When you’re a teenager with a serious illness, not many people really get what you’re going through – and it can be hard for siblings too. That’s why we’ve created Livewire: a community for young people like you,who are dealing with some tricky stuff and can do with crew who understand and offer a little extra support

Online, Livewire is a place you can visit any time, knowing you’re always amongst friends who genuinely care. Here, you can swap stories, ask for ideas, and talk about whatever’s going on in your life, from operations, MRIs and scary tests, to issues you’re having with friends and family – even your frustration at missing out on getting to the beach because of another hospital visit!

Our Livewire chat hosts are always here to listen, support discussions, provide support, and there’s never any judgment. They love good Korero and chat! It’s social media as it should be: fun, safe and drama-free.

As well as connecting with people through chat rooms, Livewire also hooks you up with some interesting and fun stuff like blogs, competitions, articles and our very own TV channel, LivewireTV. Think of it as your escape hatch on those days you feel bored or just over it.

Powered by Starlight, if you live in Australia then Livewire can also help you with your Starlight Wish journey. For more info just click here.

Who can join?

Livewire is open to anyone aged 12-20 who’s living with a chronic health condition, serious illness, or a disability. Siblings are welcome too (after all, we know this illness stuff can seriously affect you as well). You just need to be living in Australia or New Zealand to join.

Bart – LW

Tell us about yourself

Hey, I am Bart! I work as a Chat Host and Livewire In Hospital facilitator. As a chat-host, my role is to facilitate and monitor social interaction by members, encouraging all members to help create a safe and fun place for all other members. I also combine by roles online and In-Hospital to run creative competitions, exhibitions and encourage members to take part in many creative outlets, such as being involved with the Livewire Zine.

How long have you been on LW for?

I have been with LW for over 5 years!

What does LW mean to you?

LW is a safe place for all young people with an illness of some kind, to engage in social interaction that may be lacking in their immediate lives, without the fear of being judged, criticized or misunderstood. It’s a space that offers many opportunities to young people, from gaining help, socially, to being offered the chance to guide and mentor others. I’m proud to be a part of a social media tool that is so positive.

Is Livewire only online?

Nope, Livewire is rocking it in hospital wards across Australia too! As you probably know, being hospitalized in no fun at all – but our Livewire team are there to make things a little more bearable.

If you haven’t come across us in the hospital you visit, sit tight! We will soon be streaming activities straight to your computers, so you can be involved too.

So, what is Livewire like when it’s in the hospital? Well, throughout the day, our Livewire facilitator swing by the wards where young people are staying, just to say hey and see how you’re going. Then every evening, Livewire takes our the Starlight Express Rooms to run heaps of fun activities and creative workshops. Digital art, stop-motion animation, music, cooking, writing… you never know what you’ll get to do!

It’s all pretty chilled out and there’s no pressure to take part – but if you’re stuck in hospital or having treatment, it can be good to know Livewire is there.
